How honest should a hiring manager be?

Candidates lie and so do hiring managers, it’s problematic but I understand both sides reasons for doing so.

Interestingly enough I was on social media and saw a video, where a hiring manager was praising herself and a colleagues advice for recruiting, this was the advice:

In the offer letter to a candidate, tell them the pitfalls of the role, this gives a candidate a full view of the role and let’s them decide if they want to take the role, knowing the downsides.

As someone who has recruited; this is flat out being deceitful and appalling advice, and the fact that she thought this was something to brag about, tells you how toxic her and more importantly her work environment is.

In the now deleted video, when she was asked why didn’t you tell the candidates earlier on in the process, her reason “I needed a pool of options and candidates”, i.e. she was worried about the dropout rate.

This is infuriating! When I recruited, after going through their CV’s and interview questions I set, I would tell them about the pitfalls of the role, the main reason for this is, it allows them to make up their mind without hinderance; with the added bonus of if they are interviewing elsewhere, it makes it easier for them to make up their mind or even stay at the company where they are.

Did I lose candidates, yes, but it’s better to lose candidates at this stage then right at the very end which wastes everyone’s time, plus the later the stage the more likely the candidate is to accept the job, this could result in a ‘competitive yes’ with an early resignation.

How honest should a hiring manager be? very, lose the ones who know it’s not for them early, the remaining filtered candidates are ones you are aiming for anyway.
